The Clean Truth on the Latest “Dirty Soda”

Meeting appropriate daily protein goals can be challenging for most people. After undergoing a bariatric procedure such as the gastric sleeve, achieving protein intake goals is the golden ticket to weight loss. Adding protein powder into smoothie concoctions including chia seeds and berries is widely accepted as a method of increasing protein intake along with including fiber and antioxidants. However, fashionable TikTok has introduced a new “protein” trend. While no blender is needed, registered dietitians aren’t quite ready to click the “Share” button.

Popularized by Utah teacher Rebecca Gordon, millions of users are sharing their experiences drinking Protein Diet Coke, a combination of the zero calorie beverage and a flavored protein shake. As the trend evolves, variations of the recipe develop -Diet Dr. Pepper anyone?

Recipe: Combine the above ingredients - Diet Coke with a vanilla protein shake

Health experts are split on clicking the “Heart” icon below the viral TikTok videos. Acting solely as a flavor enhancer, Diet Coke offers no nutritional value alongside the protein shake.

Registered dietitian Destini Moody commented in a Healthline article, “I wouldn’t label Protein Diet Coke as a healthy drink, but I don’t think that it’s unhealthy either.” Her suggestion of consuming the protein shake directly for better health outcomes makes sense.

For example, Fairlife Core Power shakes provide essential amino acids and calcium, which promote fullness and muscle repair. Whereas diet soda…does not.

Protein can support weight loss by increasing hormones that promote satiety while reducing ghrelin, the hunger hormone.

Dr. Jeremy Korman and the Marina Weight Loss team focus on patients consuming protein-rich foods such as lean meats, eggs, dairy, legumes, and nuts. Relying heavily on protein shakes as meal replacements may lead to nutritional gaps.

Ah, protein soda heaven.

Bottom Line: If you’re eyeing a large milkshake, but have the option for a “fun” Protein Diet Coke… consider it as a Holiday Treat.
